Please reblog this to help strike a blow against pediatric cancer. I will post on Sunday exactly how much I’ve raised by doing this!

On one hand, it’s fun to learn about the childhood stories of the people who’s work I admire, such as Jake Hurwitz of CollegeHumor. On the other hand, I’m terrified of what information my dad could divulge once I have a job. Parents are a sneaky group.

I got very excited when I came across this photo, because it shows Hannah in her favorite dress. It wasn’t just that she preferred it to other dresses; she actually wore it every day for a year, no exaggeration. After twelve months, it faded a lot and the lace started to fall off. Thankfully, Hannah moved on, and the dress went into the make believe/dress-up bin, where Jake came across it a couple of years later. Sam was concerned (though the rest of us thought it was funny) when three-year-old Jake went through a period of time when he routinely wore the dress, with a matching pink headband, around the house, and insisted we call him Jacqueline.

If you don’t know about Jake and Amir, you should. Sure, College Humor didn’t so much as acknowledge my application to be an intern, but I love them all the same.

Pros, Cons, and the Inevitable.

I will be the first to admit that I didn’t blog about California near enough. Hell, I’m pretty sure I haven’t even done a “Six Words” all summer long. With two weeks and a few days left I can’t help but start comparing Los Angeles to Portales; to call such a comparison “apples to oranges” is, at the very least, a gross understatement. It’s like comparing a ripe, juicy orange from Florida (We’ll name this orange Los Angeles), to the rotten, poisonous apple that Snow White falls victim too (We’ll name this apple Portales.)

LA has…

  • An ocean.
  • Outstanding food.
  • Culture.
  • Venice beach: A simply remarkable combination of the above three.
  • Perfect weather (as long as you aren’t too far inland).
  • Civilization… big buildings and lots of people.
  • Stuff to see and stuff to do! Always! Sometimes for free!
  • Work opportunity… This is where my career is! (OK, it’s other places too).
  • UCLA. Just sayin…
  • An excuse to get an iPhone?
  • Starbucks!
  • No walmarts! (Ok, very few walmarts!)

Of course there’s also…

  • Lots of pollution. Lots. Of. Pollution.
  • Lots of people. It’s a good and bad thing.
  • Everything is more expensive! Rent, food, restaurants… it all costs a little more.
  • Traffic can be a nightmare, and attempting to figure out LA traffic patterns is going to earn you a headache.
  • Lots of hobos.
  • Lack of safety and security.

But then Portales has…

  • My friends.
  • Eastern. I like class… yeah, I’m a nerd.
  • Everything is more affordable.
  • My job at KENW-TV.
  • Just about anything is in walking distance.
  • The Dawg Houze is always fun, if not gramatically retarded.
  • I only have to stay there until December.
  • Walmart is the only affordable option. Lame.

And it also has…

  • Wind and dust. Yuck.
  • Lackluster food.
  • Lackluster coffee.
  • The movie theater is in Clovis since the Tower Twin shut down. Great…
  • Not much more secure… my truck has been broken into in both places, actually.

So amongst all this whining and complaining, I can safely say this: it’s not like I have a choice. I have to suck it up, go back to school, and graduate. If anything, LA has certainly jaded my outlook on Portales, but it’s motivation to hurry up and finish so that I can go to a big city and stay in a big city.

But for the record, I’d rather just stay here.

Amir:

Searching for “walked out” and “bruno” on Twitter is almost as fun and hilarious as the movie itself.

1 minute, 18 seconds. It's worth the wait.

This is one of the comedy sketches I got to be a part of. I don’t show up until the VERY last one, but I think it’s worth the wait (it helps that a lot of these are really funny). Even better: this one was on air.
